  • Power is both a central concept in sociology and a fundamental category in jurisprudence. Structure is a more stable way of being in which the components or elements within a system are interconnected and interact with each other. In the analysis of the basic elements of social structure, there are two distinct views, namely the dualistic model of "individual atomism" and "social ontology". Anthony Giddens argues that social structure should move beyond this dichotomy between the individual and the social, the micro and the macro, and proposes a theory of structuration that integrates the constraint of structure on the individual with the agency of the individual, where action is mediated by social structure and social structure is constantly reproduced through action. The production and reproduction of power is one of the fundamental issues studied in structuration theory, as power emerges from and affects human society. In structuration theory, power has a dual character of transformative power and dominant power, and is the medium through which action and structure are communicated. Structure gives actors the resources they need to exercise power, while action reproduces the structural features of resources that produce domination over action. Power and resources is the fundamental perspective of Giddens' study of social change. Depending on the level of power's ability to extend in time and space, Giddens distinguishes three different types of society, each with different structural characteristics. Using structuration theory as a tool of thought, Giddens uses power as a fundamental concept integrating the dichotomy of action and structure, providing a unique perspective for examining the operation of power in social structures.Based on this, this paper explores Giddens' structural theory of power in the following four sections. The first chapter discusses the theoretical foundations of structural power theory, clarifies the sources of Giddens' theory of power, and how structural power theory transcends previous theories of power. In a structural theory perspective, power is a precondition for action and is also produced, influenced and limited by the actions of actors. One can explain power in terms of both human action and structure: it is the ability of individuals to act and bring about change in a direct and voluntary way, as well as systems of domination and rule, and the rules and resource systems associated with them.Chapter 2 explores the internal logic of the operation of structural power - the transformative and dominant capacities of power. Transformative capacity gives actors the ability to intervene in a range of matters in everyday life and is a characteristic of all actions, reflecting the autonomy of the actors themselves, while dominant capacity is the domination to which actors are subjected in their everyday interactions, reflecting the dependency between actors. When people exercise their capacity to transform in their daily interactions, the dominated feel the dominance of power. The dialectic of control of power is a relationship between the transformative and dominant capacities of power, where even the actor in the most disadvantaged position in a power relationship possesses a degree of power over the other party to the power relationship.Chapter 3 deals with the mediating role of resources in structural power theory. Resources are structural elements of the social system, mediating the exercise of power and the reproduction of dominant structures. Revealing social change is one of the traditional tasks of social structure theory, and Giddens proposes a power and resource perspective for understanding social change. The amount of resources that actors can mobilise generates different spatio-temporal extensions of power. Depending on the spatio-temporal extension of power, Giddens outlines three different types of society from an ephemeral perspective, embodied in different structural features. In this way, Giddens uses power as the baseline axis of social change, with space as a resource reservoir also catalysing this process.Chapter 4 examines the contemporary value of structural power theory. The structural theory of power is proposed by Giddens after reflecting on and reinterpreting classical sociologists' theories of power in the context of the current times, offering a new perspective on state power and a new way of looking at social change. Relying on the individual agency of actors as well as authoritative resources, Giddens constructs a concept of lived politics with enactive power at its core, answering the question of how to promote self-actualization in the context of modernity and globalization.
